Bramley Bush

Raised by Mary Ann Brailsford, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England between 1809 and 1813 and introduced in 1865 by nurseryman H. Merryweather. First exhibited in 1876. Received a First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1893. The most popular cooking apple grown in the UK.  The trees are extremely vigorous and partial tip bearers so not suited to trained forms.  Cropping is heavy but can be biennial.  The fruits are sharp and juicy and will cook down to a fluff.  There is a sport of Bramley in the collections "Crimson Bramley", which is equally as delicious but the fruits as the name suggests, are crimson in colour.  Triploid so will require two compatible pollination partners.
