Espalier
Espalier apple trees are a beautiful and practical way to grow fruit, especially in smaller gardens. This formal training method became particularly popular during the Victorian period, when espaliers were used not only for efficient fruit production but also for definition, especially in the Kitchen Garden within the walled garden.
Each tree requires around 3 to 3.5 metres (10–12 feet) of horizontal space, making them ideal for training against a wall or fence. If no suitable structure is available, a simple freestanding wire system can be installed, creating a stunning living screen or focal point.
Espaliers offer numerous benefits: they’re perfect for small spaces, allow easy harvesting and pruning, and often produce fruit earlier than free-standing trees. With their clean lines and formal shape, espaliered apples combine productivity with striking visual impact. A fantastic way to add height, interest and year-round beauty.
