Join us for a practical, hands-on introduction to the art of grafting, led by our Head Nurseryman David Morrice. With a lifetime in horticulture, David worked for much of his career at the renowned East Malling Research Station before joining our nursery, where he has overseen grafting for more years than he would like to admit to!

Each year we graft thousands of trees, and David has shared his knowledge with countless students – including leading grafting courses at Brogdale.

This course is designed to give you both the theory and the confidence to try grafting yourself. You’ll learn:

  • How to identify the best graft wood and where to take it from the tree
  • The history and purpose of grafting, and why it’s still vital today
  • The dos and don’ts of successful grafting
  • Rootstock compatibility and choosing the right combinations
  • How to make the perfect grafting cut
  • Hands-on practice with apple varieties, guided by David

Each participant will graft their own apple tree during the course, which we will grow on in the nursery until autumn for you to collect. David will also guide you through the next steps of caring for your tree.
