FAN Trained

Fan training is a beautiful and practical way to grow stone fruits like plums, cherries, damsons and gages. We can also offer FAN trained apples and pears to order.

Unlike apples and pears, stone fruits don’t naturally suit espalier training, but they thrive when carefully grown into a fan. This method not only looks stunning but also helps maximise light, improve airflow, and encourage abundant crops of delicious fruit.

Each fan-trained tree needs around 2-3 metres (6.5–10 feet) of horizontal space. They are ideal for growing against a sunny wall or fence to take advantage of the warmth, which is especially important for ripening fruit. If no wall is available, a freestanding wire framework works just as well, creating an elegant living screen.

Fan-trained trees offer huge benefits: they are perfect for smaller gardens, make pruning and harvesting much easier, and are essential for getting the best results from stone fruits in cooler climates. Their graceful, open shape adds real beauty and structure to any garden space.
