Stepover Trees
Stepover apple and pear trees are a beautiful and practical way to grow your own fruit. With their origins in Victorian walled gardens, these charming low-growing trees were once used to line paths and define areas, in the kitchen garden, offering both decoration and delicious fruit. Today, they’re making a well-deserved comeback in gardens of all sizes.
Grown on special dwarf rootstocks, stepover trees are trained to grow horizontally just 50cm (about 18 inches) from soil level. The result is a neat, low "edible hedge" that not only looks fantastic but is also surprisingly productive for such a compact tree.
Typically growing to around 1.5 metres in width, stepover trees are perfect for edging pavements, borders, or raised beds. They’re also ideal for balconies, courtyard gardens, and anywhere space is limited but style and yield are still a priority.
Add a touch of Victorian charm to your garden with a stepover apple or pear tree, beautiful, compact, and perfectly suited to modern living.
