ESTIMATED TO BE READY IN AUTUMN
Our family trees are a clever way of growing more fruit in a small place as they have three varieties of pear grafted on one tree!
We have selected three varieties that will work together in terms of pollination and vigour to achieve a lovely balanced shape and to fill the fruit bowl.
Clara Frijs
An old variety originating from Denmark. First described by J.A. Bentzien in the Danish Garden Journal in 1858. Fruits have very juicy, sweet flesh with excellent flavour.
Fondante de Cuerne
Discovered around Kortrijk (Courtrai), Belgium, by M. Reynaert‑Beernaert near the village of Cuerne; first documented in the mid‑19th century. The fruits are large and apple shaped. White to pale yellow, semi‑fine to melting (‘fondante’): juicy, buttery, with a sweet, wine‑like aroma reminiscent of the Poire d’Amande.
Glou Morceau
An excellent dessert pear, raised by Abbe Hardenpoint of Mons Belgium in 1750. This pear is a medium to large oval shaped fruit, smooth skin greenish yellow with some russeting. Sweet rich flavour with a white juicy flesh.
The varieties on this family tree have been chosen by our Head Nurseryman. They all come highly recommended from Joan Morgan and were featured in her ultimate guide to Pears "The book of Pears"
