Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ is a spectacular ornamental flowering cherry, combining an impressive display of rich pink spring blossom with distinctive deep purple foliage. Closely related to the popular ‘Kanzan’, it is an excellent choice for adding both colour and structure to the garden throughout the growing season.
In mid to late spring, the branches are covered with generous clusters of large, double pink flowers. The vibrant blossom contrasts beautifully against the emerging bronze-purple leaves, creating a particularly striking display.
As the season progresses, the foliage develops into a rich burgundy-purple and retains its strong colour throughout the summer. In autumn, the leaves take on attractive shades of bronze and red before falling, giving ‘Royal Burgundy’ interest across several seasons.
The tree develops a broadly vase-shaped to rounded crown as it matures, making it an impressive specimen tree for lawns, larger gardens, driveways and landscaping schemes. Its dark foliage also provides an excellent contrast when planted alongside green-leaved trees and shrubs.
Hardy and reliable, Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ performs best in a sunny position in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it requires relatively little maintenance and provides a superb combination of spring blossom and long-lasting foliage colour.
